Guernsey Post’s philatelic bureau announces the release of new stamps, which feature the characters who appear on the Wombles Trail found in Alderney. This stamp issue pays tribute to celebrated author Elisabeth Beresford, creator of The Wombles, who made Alderney her home for over 30 years.

The stamps, which will be released following Royal Approval, depict four foot high wooden sculptures of iconic Womble characters carved from English oak by artist Mike Burgess, which are part of a trail curated by the Guernsey Lions Club in honour of Beresford’s legacy.

New Characters

Each stamp captures a Womble in situ around Alderney: Madame Cholet bustles at Alderney Harbour; Great Uncle Bulgaria presides wisely at Alderney Airport; inventive Tobermory waits at Mannez Train Station; and the ever-relaxed Orinoco reclines on a children’s ‘whisper seat’ at the Butes Playground. Newer characters include clever Wellington at the Hospital roundabout and the adventurous, strong-willed Alderney, found at Le Clonque Car Park.

Awarded an MBE in 1998 for her services to children’s literature, Elisabeth Beresford was an integral part of island life. Her influence is still felt today through her books, many of which are set on Alderney, and through the important environmental message championed by the Wombles.

Bridget Yabsley, head of philatelic at Guernsey Post, said: “This delightful stamp issue not only commemorates Elisabeth Beresford’s contribution to literature and island life but also captures the nostalgia of The Wombles that are much loved by many generations.”
