During the early days of motor sport, racing cars were still driven under their own power to races such as Le Mans and Monza, or to the Targa Florio or the Mille Miglia. Increasing professionalism in the 1950s and the growing amount of equipment that was needed led the racing teams of the day to start using bespoke transport vehicles.

In the mid-'60s, Porsche came up with the idea for two transport vehicles that were specially designed to meet the requirements of its motor acing activities and able to transport the additionally required engines, gearboxes and chassis parts.

The technical basis for the new Porsche racing transporter was the Mercedes-Benz O317 underfloor-engine bus. Its self-supporting design meant it was ideal for the complex conversion.

Porsche presented its newly developed 3-litre, 8-cylinder racer, the Porsche 908, in October 1967. The model was available as both a short and long-tail version, each suited to different types of circuits.

To mark ‘70 Years of Porsche’ in 2018, Schuco as produced a splendid presentation set in 1/43 scale, comprising the Mercedes-Benz O317 transporter with both versions of the 908. The transporter features opening rear doors with attachable ramps to pose the cars at two different angles. It also comes with mirrors and reflectors to attach.

Limited to just 700 sets and offered in a wooden presentation box, the trio make for a marvellous combination that gives great opportunities for display. Finish is excellent on all three vehicles and the set is totally worthy of the price tag in my opinion.

Perfect for any historic Porsche enthusiast and fans of classic racing transporters, this will instantly become very collectable.
