What a brilliant and highly-innovative idea - package the model up in a replica support truck for a great display idea! Following on from the Editor's Choice in the March issue of Diecast Collector (buy yours here), Tarma Works has now produced the iconic Castrol-liveried Supra to go with the Le Mans 1995 version reviewed last month.
Toyota's new Supra GT had made its debut in the All-Japan Grand Touring Car Championship (JGTC), the forerunner to the present-day Super GT series, at the beginning of the 1995 season. Run by TOM’s (Tachi Oiwa Motor Sports), the car really took the fight to the previously-dominant Nissan Skyline GT-Rs.
Probably the most recognisable car from that series, at the time, is the car you see here, immortalised to become the stuff of legend, thanks to inclusion from the very beginning in Playstation's cult Gran Turismo console game. But the Castrol livery wasn't the only thing in common with the company's rally car programme - the Supra had the engine too.
Yet again, the execution of the Supra GT's meaty stance is really well captured in diecast and the detailing is excellent, as is the application of the graphics - very impressive indeed for this scale. The truck 'packaging' is all moulded-plastic, but does roll on its wheels, and opens easily and neatly, as shown in the photo to the right, to reveal its precious cargo. The car is screwed securely to the 'base' of the truck, in the same way it would be to a conventional base. The whole ensemble is then boxed in a very stylish, Castrol-branded manilla box.
Another neat feature of the truck is that the hinged sides of the rear body can be detached from the truck chassis, and the Tarmac Works containers fit directly on the back as an alternative.
An absolute treat, but these really are selling as fast as the car went on the track, so be quick as numbers are limited!
