Understanding the vehicle’s backstory behind a newly-issued model
Captivated by the matte finish paintwork of this AMG Coupé, I wanted to know more about its full specification. My background research revealed that, as well as illustrating, yet again, just how thorough GT Spirit’s attention to detail and how meticulous its modelling is, the actual edition itself was something pretty special.
GT Spirit Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Edition 507 - 2014 (GT381)
The W204 C63 series was launched, as a saloon and estate, in 2007. The Coupé followed soon after. All three body types were subsequently premiered at the Geneva Motor Show in 2013, as production run finale ‘AMG Edition 507’s. These modified C63 models were, even by AMG standards, something awesome to the point of fearsome, being available only in limited numbers through 2013 and until the end of C63 production in 2014.
Combining body panels, such as the distinctive, vented, aluminium bonnet and mechanical parts from C63 AMG Coupe Black Series, the ‘Edition 507’ cars had AMG’s 6.3-litre V8 engine that developed over 500 bhp, enabling them to achieve 0-60mph in 4.1 seconds and a top speed of just over 170 mph. Not surprisingly, the supporting braking and suspension systems were complex and very highly-engineered.
Taking a close look at GT Spirit’s Coupé version, first stop is that (flawless) matte paintwork, authentically representing the “designo magno platinum” finish, available as an option only on the ‘Edition 507’ version, in addition to the very limited choice of other colours (Polar White, Fire Opal, Obsidian Black, Tenorite Grey and Iridium Silver), drawn from the existing C63 AMG range.
Continuing around the exterior of GT Spirit’s 1/18 model, the full set of ‘Edition 507’ features are all there, in often minute detail. These include a lot of AMG black detailing (some of which was in high gloss finish) including lower front bumper insert, radiator grille and running light surrounds, darkened headlights, exterior mirror housings and boot lid lip spoiler. The edition was shod with newly-designed AMG cross-spoke 19 inch light-alloy forged wheels, in either Titanium Grey, with a high-sheen finish, or matte black with high-sheen rim flanges, of which GT Spirit chose the latter. These rims sat over red AMG-embossed callipers of the carbon-ceramic brakes discs. Finishing touches include matte graphite grey appliqué to the car’s lower body sides and discrete AMG badging fitted variously around the car.
As examples of GT Spirit’s meticulous modelling, the hallmark flat on the rim flange of the original is there in miniature as is the AMG embossing on the brake calliper housing. Thanks to the black-smoked ‘greenhouse’ glazing that spans the top of the passenger compartment with its panoramic sunroof section, we get an excellent view of the fully-detailed AMG version interior.
A particularly imposing model of a much sought after car, this release will surely be a ‘must have’ for Mercedes-Benz and AMG model collectors alike.
