The Tyrrell Racing Organisation was a motor racing team and Formula One constructor founded by Ken Tyrrell, which started racing in 1958 and subsequently built its own cars from 1970. The team experienced its greatest success in the early 1970s, when it won two Drivers' Championships (1971 and 1973) and one Constructors' Championship (1971). The team never reached such heights again, although it continued to win races through the 1970s and into the early 1980s, taking the final win for the Ford Cosworth DFV engine at Detroit in 1983. The team was bought by British American Tobacco in 1997 and completed its final season as Tyrrell in 1998.
Late in 1972, at the Canadian Grand Prix, Tyrrell debuted its new design, the 006, in the hands of talented French driver, François Cevert, who had recently finished 2nd for Matra at the Le Mans 24 Hours. Although Cevert retired from that first race for the 006, he finished 2nd at the final race of the season, at Watkins Glen.
A second chassis was built for Cevert's teammate, Jackie Stewart, and he raced 006/2 for the majority of 1973, winning the Drivers' Championship. Despite Stewart's success (five wins), Cevert finished 2nd on six occasions, including at the Belgian Grand Prix, held at Zolder. This is the car that is replicated here (MCG has also released Stewart's 006 from the 1973 Monaco GP, his third win of that year, as MCG18600F).
Cevert damaged his original chassis in Canada, so a new car was built for the final 1973 race at Watkins Glen – 006/3. Cevert crashed during qualifying in this car and was killed instantly. Stewart drove the circuit in 006/2 to see what had happened to his friend and teammate, returned to the pits and instantly retired from racing.
MCG's model is a fitting tribute to this young talent lost way too soon. The finish is beautiful throughout and the simple graphics are perfectly applied, particularly to Cevert's helmet. Great value model and a champion job.
