Star Trek Collectables Beam Down at Aston's Toy Auctions

This year marks the 25th anniversary since the adventures of Jean Luc Picard and the rest of the Star Trek: Next Generation crew first blasted onto our screens. Although Star Trek has never really maintained the collectable popularity of something like Star Wars – or, arguably, the huge cultural impact – there are many fans out there who are still keen to grab any Trek memorabilia.

So, with this in mind, it seems fitting that at Aston’s Toy Auctions in Dudley, there were a number of Star Trek-themed lots ready to be picked up by eagle-eyed Trekkies or Trekkers during the September sale.

One of more interesting lots was a collection of 15 Star Trek-themed model kits by a range of manufacturers including Revell and AMT. Among the ships included were, of course, the U.S.S. Enterprise and other enemy craft, such as a Klingon Bird of Prey and Klingon Battle Cruiser. Originally estimated at £80-100, lot 12 sold for £130 (prices do not include buyer’s premium).

For anyone starting out their Star Trek collection, lot 92 would have provided the perfect foundation because it contained more than 30 carded action figures. Created by Diamond Select Toys in America, the lot contained a number of recognisable characters, such as Captain James T. Kirk, Sulu and Scotty, along with other less known characters, like Vina Orion Slave Girl (nope, we’ve never heard of her either).

The collection sold for £160 – that’s just £5 per model and a potentially wise investment, just in case the Star Trek market picks up with a new film release scheduled for 2013.

Finally among the Star Trek lots was a quantity of mixed items, including more action figures, mini play sets and Micro Machines spaceships. Again, this exceeded the pre-sale estimates of £50-70 to make £110.

It’s certainly going to be interesting to see how the Star Trek collectables market reacts to the new film and we could prices for similar items increase in the immediate run-up and aftermath. We’ll certainly be watching the auctions and will keep you informed.
