In case you thought that the Matchbox Yesteryear range had died a death, the Vectis December sale proved otherwise. This is still a highly collectable genre, as witnessed by some of the prices.
A Y1 Jaguar SS100 colour trial model in metallic green with black seats and folded hood was built on a metallic silver chassis. Chrome 24 spoke wheels with whitewall tyres set this mint model off and it made £720. The Y4 1930 Duesenberg Model J Town Car, a first issue in white with a cast open roof cross, was fitted with dark yellow seats and roof and sported a brick red chassis. Nearly mint and estimated at £1,200 it realised £3,024. However, that was cheap compared with the Y6 AEC Y Type Lorry (with Osram Lamps logo) in duck egg blue with silver trim. Boxed and estimated at £700-900, this sold for a staggering £6,912.
The colour variations really had it on the day, though: the Y6 Bugatti type 35 pre-production colour trial in metallic emerald green and bearing racing number 6 decals and a gold radiator was another example. The model differed from the production version in not having the handbrake raised locating ring cast: in good plus to excellent condition and with a type C box, it was knocked down for £1,440.
Stealing the show, though, was undoubtedly the Y16 1904 Spyker (Issue 6), with a maroon body and chassis, and with type 1 cast open running board side panels. It featured dark green seats, a type A base with single rear ejector ring cast beneath the rear axle and brass detailed type A wheels. Boxed and estimated at £1,800-2,200, someone snapped up this rare colour for a mere £6,048.
