Marklin Engine Hall makes more than £50,000 at Vectis Auctions

An exceptional Marklin Engine Hall, produced in 1906 by the famous German company, was the highlight during Vectis’ November Train and Toy Sale at the Benn Hall in Rugby. Ahead of the auction, it was already considered one to watch, with numerous condition reports and viewings.

The item, being sold by a private collector, was in remarkable condition. The two-room engine hall had individually pitched roofs with ornate lattic work and girdering, with three supporting pillars and a large removable chimney to the rear.

Each room had faux tiling with a sliding door in between the pair, while the engine room had an opening door to the rear. Meanwhile, the engine was connected to a line shaft with three pulleys of different sizes that could be connected to various accessories outside of the hall.

Estimated at £60,000 to £80,000 there was a huge sense of anticipation ahead of the sale, even members of Vectis staff unable to attend the auction logged into the website to see how much it went for. A committed European telephone bidder helped to ensure the hammer finally fell on £54,000. Although this was under the lowest estimate, it’s still the highest price Vectis has achieved for a single item.
