Sale of a significant collection of rare sample tins starts today

A significant collection of rare sample tins, pre-manufacture print sheets and original artwork is to be auctioned by Hansons Auctioneers of Derby, UK.

The collection of over 200 rare pieces was rescued from commercial disposal nearly 20 years ago and has been carefully stored ever since. Dating mostly from the 1930s-1950s but with pieces as early as the 1900s, it includes tobacciana, Brilliantine and soap, chocolate and confectionery, medicinal, pharmaceutical, engineering and more.

What makes these unusual or, more accurately, unique is that they are original sample pieces, many with sample tags and manufacturing information attached. They are unused, unfilled and unissued and are in amazing condition. Several of the items are pre-production flat tinplate sheets, complete with printed images. These would then be sent down the line to be stamped into the correct shape for each tin.

In addition, the collection features original artwork for a number of notable designs, complete with dimensions, manufacturing instructions and the original tooling numbers. Examples include signs for Woman’s Illustrated and Youma Malt Bread, Ogden’s Lanyard and Old Castle Navy Cut tobacco tins, Oilily Soap, Barker and Dobson’s, Sharp’s Super Kreem, Cadbury’s Bournvita, Sloane’s Liniment and even a selection of medical remedies. They are both for the home market and for overseas customers, including the United States, Africa and Asia and some are present in various language forms. Of great interest to worldwide collectors of antique and vintage tins and signs, and to historians alike, these unusual lots are sure to raise great interest.

The auction takes place over four days: 20th, 21st, 24th and 25th July 2023.
