The 2020 Brexit 50p
The 2020 Brexit 50p coin displays “Peace, Prosperity and Friendship with all Nations” alongside the date underneath – this date is what has caused all the flurry around collecting this coin.
Over 10 million were minted with the date 31 January 2020 and many entered circulation. These versions are still only worth 50p, so the value is yet to increase as they are still found in change today.

The Rare Brexit 50p Coin
In 2018, it was announced that there would be a commemorative 50p coin to mark the UK’s departure from the EU, the very first one that was announced had 29 March 2019 written underneath the inscription “peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations.”
Only 1,000 of these were minted and 900 were melted down. That left 100 examples that are still being securely held by The Royal Mint.

Then, when the departure was rescheduled, over 1 million coins were minted with the new planned withdrawal date of the 31 October 2019. They were intended to be melted down but a few slipped into circulation.
This created a collecting frenzy were collectors raced to find the 2019 ‘error’ coins in circulation. Now they are highly sought after and can be worth up to £40,000. Supposedly there are only two examples in circulation, making them some of the rarest British 50ps ever.

Both examples of this 50p have different obverses, one of the examples features Jody Clark’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the year 2019 and the denomination ’50 PENCE.’
Whereas the obverse of the other features Clark’s portrait again with the year 2019 but is missing the denomination – this adds another layer of rarity that the other coin misses. That could possibly make this version worth even more than the suspected £40,000.
Keep an eye out though there could be more than two out there that are yet to be discovered!

The Brexit 50p is a fascinating piece of history, marking a significant political moment in history and something that will be talked about in the history book
