We have discussed the popular Paddington 50p and the collection of Beatrix Potter 50ps, but there is another favourite amongst children’s book characters we are yet to mention. A little bear called Pooh.

Winnie the Pooh, Piglet and Christopher Robin feature on a collection of 50p coins that was released by The Royal Mint in 2020. Designed with charming illustrations from the original E.H. Shepard.

Winnie the Pooh 50p Series

This was the first time Winnie the Pooh had been featured on a coin struck by The Royal Mint, and it was even approved by Buckingham Palace. The original three coins were released in 2020 and was loved by so many they released subsequent coins in 2021 and 2022.

All the Winnie the Pooh 50p coins are issued in uncirculated format, which means the coins never entered general circulation. The coins were created for collectors and can be bought online for various prices depending on the site.

The 2020 Winnie the Pooh 50p Coin Collection

In this series, three coins were released in full colour, which is rather rare for a first series. They featured coins representing Pooh sat eating honey beside a honey pot, Christopher Robin coming down the stairs, bear in hand and Piglet pictured with a dandelion.

The value of these coins varies depending on the version. Brilliant Uncirculated editions can be bought for £10-£20, the silver-proof versions are £67.50, and the gold-proof coins are worth £1,125 and these prices are still expected to increase over the years.

The 2022 Winnie the Pooh 50p Coin Collection

Then finally in 2022, three more designs were released. These featured Eeyore, Kanga and Roo and Pooh with some of his closest friends in the Hundred Acre Woods.

The values of these are like the previous collection as they were only released a year apart, the only difference in valuations is the gold-proof versions of this collection is worth more at £1,150. This is unusual as the older coins are often the more valuable ones. All these prices vary depending on the condition of the coin.

If you do find one in your change, you should count yourself lucky and put it aside for safe keeping, this is because these 50ps are not intended to be used in general circulation. You never know, you might go into the shop for a loaf of bread and come out with 50p change worth £1000!
