Which Beatrix Potter coins are the most valuable?

The scarcest Beatrix Potter 50p is the 2018 Peter Rabbit and Flopsy Bunny coins. They both had a relatively low mintage of 1.4 million. They currently sell for around £5, with the price likely to increase in years to come. This is because more collectors are taking them out of circulation.

Collectors currently consider the Jemima Puddle-Duck 50p the most valuable. With a mintage of 2.1 million, this coin is no longer available from The Royal Mint shop. Buyers can find examples on eBay for between £10 and £20.

Why are Beatrix Potter coins selling for £100s on eBay?

Different versions of new coins were issued by The Royal Mint. The prices above are for circulated coins, that we find in our loose change. The Royal Mint also released Brilliant Uncirculated and Silver Proof Coloured versions alongside the circulated coins.

The Royal Mint released only 15,000 of the 2016 Peter Rabbit coloured version. These quickly sold out and led to The Royal Mint website crashing because of high demand. This 50p coin is now worth around £400.

Collectors can buy the coloured versions of the 2017 coins for £125 each from sites like The Westminster Collection. Sellers price the 2018 coloured versions at £60 each. They are all likely to go up in value over the years because of their limited numbers.

Be careful though because examples with a ‘professionally made sticker’ are being offered on eBay. These coins are not official and just feature a coloured sticker over the original design.

The Brilliant Uncirculated versions are only marginally more valuable than the examples we find in our loose change. You can get the Brilliant Uncirculated versions of the 2018 coins for £10 from The Royal Mint.
