With local news coverage and enquiries from around the world, it's safe to say there was a lot of anticipation ahead of Vectis' toy sale on 6th August. This was because the highlight of the auction was three separate collections of Star Wars items, ranging from loose figures to signed carded figures and trade packs that were extremely sought after. In total there were 171 lots, which realised a fantastic £32,070 - especially considering the pre-sale estimate was £11,740.

Eight trade packs were certainly the highlight of the Star Wars pieces, although the specialist at Vectis had given each a cautious estimate of £200-400, depending on the lot. Unsurprisingly the less the box had been opened, the more sought after it became, as proved by lot 1342 (pictured to your right), a Palitoy/General Mills Star Wars Return of the Jedi box of six tri-logo Star Wars Return of the Jedi Rancor monsters. Items were factory sealed within the trade box, which only had one top flap carefully opened and had the following stickers that stated #933542 Rancor Monster 6 and blue and white Palitoy mailing label "Kenner Parker The Palitoy Co, Coalville, Leicester LE6 2DE" delivery name and address Taras, 87 Station Road, Edgeware, Middx, cat. no. 933542 Star Wars Rancor Monster. This impressive beast sold for £2,040.

This wasn't the only monstrous item to catch the eye of bidders and it was followed by a Palitoy/General Mills Star Wars Return of The Jedi Trade Pack of six Jabba The Hutt Throne Rooms. 1983 issue, mint, factory sealed within plain card trade box that was still sealed, label to end #933507 Jabba The Hutt 6. These also sold for £2,040.

The trade packs ended with a flourish thanks to a Kenner Star Wars Return of The Jedi Trade Pack of six Y-Wing Fighters. Normally a sought-after vehicle on its own, the opportunity to pick up six was clearly too good to miss. Estimated at £600-800, the trade pack sold for £1,800.

But it wasn't just the trade packs that sold well and individual figures also proved a hit with buyers - particularly those that had been packaged on the wrong card, such as a Palitoy/General Mills Star Wars Return of the Jedi Tri-logo Stormtrooper (Hoth) 3 3/4" figure mis-carded onto a FX-7 70 figure back 1983 card. It was certainly a costly mistake, as one collector snapped it up for £960.

Another confused carded figure also hit a high note and in this case it was a Palitoy/General Mills Star Wars Return of the Jedi Tri-logo mis-carded Imperial TIE Fighter Pilot on a Darth Vader 70 back 1983 issue card. Estimated at £80-100, it realised £624.

Finally, normally collectors don't like figures that have been defaced but if that defacing is actually an autograph from a member of the Star Wars cast... then it's a different matter. This was proved perfectly by a Palitoys/General Mills Star Wars Return of the Jedi tri-logo signed Yak Face 3 3/4" carded figure, signed by Sean Crawford, who played Yak Face. It came complete with a photograph as evidence of signing at the Birmingham NEC on 02/04/04. Estimated at £300-500, it made £648.
