A boxed silver Meccano motor car constructor kit together with the original Meccano kit for the same vehicle will be a lot to look out for at Bonhams two-day Gentleman’s Library sale on January 28th and 29th in London’s Knightsbridge. The corresponding car kits are fitted into a 56cm x 44cm x 22.5cm wood brass-banded box, and estimated at £10,000-15,000.
The original 1930 boxed set, along with its instructions, rests in the under tray of the wooden case. Its parts form the Meccano number 2 model constructor clockwork motor car, with a vivid red body and light blue trim. The parts of the 1995 silver model, which is branded with the maker’s mark for Garrard and Co Ltd, London, are fitted onto three lift-out boards within the case’s upper tray.
The inter-war years saw Meccano produce some of the finest quality mass-produced metal toys ever made in the UK. After 1920, its range expanded, with the successful Aeroplane and Motor Car Constructor sets appearing on the market in consecutive years. The motor car models consist of custom parts that allow a range of car variations, and are driven by powerful Clockwork Motors, fueling long, speedy runs on just one winding.
The Meccano models were (often, are) described as the “Perfect Miniature Motor Cars”. And no wonder: It’s not often that you can afford your dream car, let alone carry it home in your pocket.
