It's a record-breaker

A new record price for a LEGO brick was set at a Catawiki auction in London in February, when a limited edition gold brick was gavelled at £16,100.  The rare brick, one of no more than ten thought to exist, was given by LEGO Company to business partners and employees of more than 25 years tenure between 1979 and 1981. The brick sold in the auction was sold by the family member of an Italian business partner of LEGO who received the brick as thanks for his contribution to the development of LEGO in Italy. Bids came in from around the world, but the final bid was from a British collector, the London-based online auction house said.
