We knew it was going to be something special but nothing could have prepared us for the result of Special Auction Services’ sale on 20th November. Ahead of the auction there was much talk about two Dinky 28 Series Delivery Van sets that were set to go under the hammer. With an estimate of £10,000 to £15,000 each, there was a definite sense of expectation as the bidding opened and quickly shot through the top estimates.

The first set containing No. 28a Hornby Trains (yellow body, blue wash wheels), No. 28b Pickford's (royal blue body, purple wash wheels), No.28c Manchester Guardian (black/red body, purple wash wheels), No. 28d OXO (blue body, purple wash wheels) No. 28e Firestone Tyres (white body, purple wash wheels) and No. 28f Palethorpes Sausages (grey body, purple wash wheels) sold for a staggering £20,000!

Next the second set containing No. 28g Kodak (yellow body, blue wash wheels), No. 28h Sharp's Toffee (black/red body, blue wash wheels), No. 28k Marsh's Sausages (dark green body, purple wash wheels), No. 28l Crawfords Biscuits (orange body, blue wash wheels), No. 28m Wakefield's Castrol (green body, light green wash wheels) and No. 28n Meccano (yellow body, blue wash wheels), made £19,000.

The sets were from the early days of Dinky and rarely come up in auction – so the fact that two were being sold on the same day was exceptionally rare, as Special Auction Services’ Hugo Marsh explained: “I reckon that, unless I live to be 150, which is unlikely, I don’t think I’ll see these two sets in auction again. I very much doubt they’ll ever appear together.” Watch the rest of interview with Hugo below:
