The Royal Mint has announced the sell-out of its 2009 Piedfort 2012 Olympic Countdown Coin – part of the best-selling Olympic coin programme in history.
All 6,000 of the 2009 Piedfort Countdown coins have sold out, while sales of the gold and silver Proof Countdown coins have been progressing well.
Dave Knight, Director of Commemorative Coins at the Royal Mint, said: ‘We are extremely pleased with the way the Countdown Coin range has been embraced by collectors around the world. Demand has been strong and this is sure to increase as we get closer to 2012.’
The second coin in the Countdown series, the ‘Two Years to Go’ coin, will feature two track runners along with the number two. The obverse of the coin has been designed by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS with the Olympic reverse designed by Claire Aldridge, a member of the Royal Mint’s engraving team.
The 2010 UK Countdown to London 2012 £5 coin will be produced in gold Proof, silver Proof, Piedfort and cupro-nickel to Brilliant Uncirculated standard. Previous purchasers of the 2012 Countdown coins will have the opportunity to pre-order the 2010 coin.
