When 'Top Gear' went amphibious
They’re known for their challenges and, in series 10, the ‘Top Gear’ team took to the water... in cars. Well, would you expect anything else of Jezza, the Hamster and Captain Slow? No, me neither!
Attempting to cross the English Channel, the team ‘upgraded’ three everyday vehicles. Jeremy Clarkson created an amphibious Nissan Pick-up, dubbed the ‘Nissank’. Richard Hammond used a Volkswagen Transporter, which he called the ‘Dampervan’. James May used the Triumph Herald that he had previously had moderate success with when he attempted to cross a reservoir in series eight.
To begin with, the team enjoyed themselves in their home-made amphibians but soon realised that the waves on the English Channel were almost the same size as them… The elements had beaten them.
With a few adjustments, including an out board engine on Hammond’s Dampervan, the team took to the sea once more. May was forced to abandon his Herald and became Hammond’s ‘cabin boy’ instead.
