Interest in items connected with the White Star Line, whose cruise ships included the ill-fated Titanic, continue to generate great interest. The appearance of four of the company’s egg cups at Cuttlestone’s sale on Friday 4th March was bound to generate some big bids.
The vendors, from Southampton, were drawn to Cuttlestones after the auction house’s previous success with a range of White Star Line items, including a set of six cups, that realised just under £1,000 at a sale in March 2010.
These egg cups were potentially more valuable, with one stamped 1912 – the year the Titanic sank – and another dated 1908.
Before the sale, auctioneer and valuer Dave Eglington commented: “White Star Line items are highly collectable and these are particularly rare so watch this space!”
He certainly wasn’t wrong as, following an active bidding battle, the hammer fell at £1,800.
