Aliens and animals at Vectis

Vectis’ figure auction turned up some of the more unusual models. A Meccano-made Women's League of Health and Beauty, pre-war issue, comprising a girl standing exercising in a dark blue bathing suit was a good example. She exhibited some minor paint chips but was very rare indeed. Although estimated at £30-50, £432 was splashed out on her. A Wend-Al Nursery Rhyme Series set, comprising the three bears, was a unique set (apparently) and virtually mint overall. Just shy of £800 was needed to take them home.

Several John Hill & Co lots were sold: in the Promotional Series, there was the "Farmers Glory" Breakfast Cereal standing farmer in a grey suit (times change!), with a black hat and wearing a red and yellow spotted neckerchief and handkerchief. Complete with a running fox, the pair were contained within an original paper packet. The duo were bid to £360.

From the John Hill & Co Space Series, a rare metallic green square bodied robot with a silver front made an appearance. It was accompanied by an Intelligent Alien in metallic green. With minor age wear, the pair were generally excellent overall. In the event, the estimate of £60 wasn‘t quite enough, for the space age travellers realised £504. Exactly the same money secured another duo, this time in the equally rare metallic blue.

Another John Hill & Co lot was the Black Magic "Dorre" Series, comprising zoo type animals, including a giraffe, ostrich, tiger and crocodile. Nine animals were offered and the collection settled on £408.

From Britains came Set 641, a Civilian Motorcycle and Sidecar (made during 1932-41 only). A red motorcycle and sidecar with a grey-suited rider wearing a pink shirt and black tie was accompanied by a passenger in a green coat. Hard to find in this condition, the assembly was tagged at £300-500 but realised a healthy £660.
