New stamps focus on maps of Pitcairn Island through the centuries

The Pitcairn Islands has announced the release of four new stamps which focus on different maps of the islands from the 18th century onwards.

Pitcairn Islands Maps Through the Centuries consists of four different stamps which features maps of 1773, 1825, 1961 and 2005. A first day cover with stamp set is also available. Designer Denise Durkin of Wellington, New Zealand, has placed the historic maps onto a white background, with each map featuring different topographical details from the Pitcairn Islands.

Four map-makers are featured: Captain Philip Carteret (1773 Bayly Map) who discovered Pitcairn Island in 1767; Captain F W Beechey (1825 Beechey Map) who had the island mapped for the first time since Carteret, Frederick Martin Fred Christian (1961 Christian map) a former chief magistrate of Pitcairn Island; and David Evans (2005 Evans Map) a retired geophysicist who has visited the Pitcairn Islands numerous times.
