P&O originally established ferry services in the United Kingdom in the late 1960s across the English Channel and on the North Sea, fast becoming a common sights on our roads with its shipping containers being ferried by trucks crossing the UK between ports.
Volvo launched its F10 and F12 tractor units in 1977. The F16 was added to the range in 1987 and, between the three types, roughly 200,000 examples were manufactured up to 1993.
The basic chassis and driveline components of the trucks, when launched in 1977, were largely based on the 1973 Volvo N-series. Various power outputs were offered, and the straight six-cylinder turbocharged diesel engines of Volvo's own make received several modifications.
Ixo's large scale truck range continues to go from strength to strength with this rather wonderful release. The classic Volvo F10 tractor unit is beautifully modelled in diecast with some truly excellent detail both inside and out, including to the rear. The trailer is diecast and the containers themselves are moulded in plastic, making full use of the ability to incorporate more detail as a result, especially to the rear doors.
The whole combination is splendidly finished in the P&O house colours of the period.
