As the Apollo Space Programme attempted to place humans on the surface of the moon in the summer of 1969, the world held its breath as NASA transmitted sound and pictures from its incredible mission across the globe.

Becoming perhaps the most recognised craft to an entire generation of people, the Lunar Module, that landed Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the moon on 20th July 1969, represented the pinnacle of human engineering prowess at the time.

This summer saw the 50th anniversary celebrations of this incredible achievement and Corgi has created a wonderful pair of commemorative releases.

Made for its Showcase range, the detail is fairly basic but the pair make a fantastic display nevertheless. The Lunar Module actually separates into two parts, just as the real thing did when the astronauts departed the moon. Either can be mounted on the supplied clear plastic stand so the model can be displayed in one of three ways - as pictured above (descending to the surface), freestanding (on the surface) or lander freestanding and escape pod on stand (leaving the surface).

The Command Module (technically the Command and Service Module as the Command Module was just the top part used to return to Earth) is a single casting and displays well on its own clear plastic stand. Both are rather nice mementos of the anniversary and selling rather well, so act fast! .
