The Martians are invading and they've landed in... erm, Ilkley, Yorkshire. At least that what it looked like during the April sale at Hartleys Auctioneers, which included a host of out of this world toys, from tinplate robots to ray guns.
One of the pricier pieces was actually a replica, rather than an original. Mr Atomic was made by MTH Productions in 1994 and was a replica of the tinplate 1950s model by Cragstan. This limited edition (number 382 out of 500) was finished in blue and was just over eight-inches high. It came with its original box plus certificate and sold for bang on the low estimate of £250.
The replica results continued with an Osaka Mechanised Robot from Japan, released in 1990 and based on the famous Robbie the Robot character from the film Forbidden Planet. Made from tinplate with a blue body and red hands/feet, the robot blasted its way to £200.
Another auction invader was an Alps Television Spaceman Robot made in Japan in 1961 - the golden age of science fiction. Constructed mainly from tinplate, the robot featured a walking action and illuminated chest piece to mimic a television screen. Bidders watched as the TV bot marched to £240.
But it wasn't just Japanese bots that proved to be a hit, as a Dux Astroman that was made in West Germany in the 1960s also stirred up some interest with the robot bidders. Made from plastic and standing more than 11-inches tall, it sold for £180.
Finally in our selection of delightful droids is a 1960s Robotank ZR1 by Nomura. This quirky-looking tinplate treasure sold for a reasonable £190, just over the low estimate.
