High prices achieved for toys at Lacy, Scott & Knight

The first Collectors’ Model Sale of the year held by Lacy, Scott & Knight at Bury St Edmunds on Saturday 11th February was certainly a varied event with some four-figure prices realised among the large scale railway items.
A 3½in gauge live steam Q1 Class locomotive, Bulleid’s Southern Railway Austere 0-6-0 tender locomotive design making a rare choice of prototype, reached a hammer price of £2,400, while a gauge 1 clockwork Bing for Bassett-Lowke GNR Ivatt Atlantic made £1,300. A Hornby O gauge clockwork LNER No 2 Special 4-4-0 ‘Yorkshire’ locomotive and tender sold at £680.
A fine single-owner collection of Dinky cars, mainly c.1947-1950, comprising approx 60 lots, made a total of around £3,000.
Other highlights included a lot comprising Meccano gears and brassware in a No 5 cabinet, which made a hammer price of £420, while a radio controlled ME BF109 aircraft with 48in wing span raised £220 against pre-sale estimates of £120-180.
A good run of Tri-ang and Tri-ang Hornby model railway catalogues, Nos 2-18, in a folder, sold for a hammer price of £120 against estimates of £50-60 while a Tri-ang Railways No 1 catalogue, with small tear to the cover and slight staining, went at just under its lower estimate at £45.
David Ellis, LSK’s Model Consultant (Diecast & Tinplate Toys), said that his surprise of the day was provided by Lot 1236, a boxed Roxy Models of Hong Kong No 272T plastic Triumph TR-5 red car and lime green caravan, with both the model and box showing no defects, making £120 against pre-sale estimates of £35-45.
“On the downside,” David added, “a large Lesney Coronation coach in very good condition, estimated at £150, failed to sell – how times change!”
LSK’s next Collectors’ Model Sale is to be held on Saturday 19th May and featured lots will include a rare variation of a tinplate ‘Bluebird’ car.
