Grandma's Teddy Bear Museum goes under the hammer at SAS

Over 300 lots of antique and vintage teddy bears from Grandma's Teddy Bear Museum, the private museum of Hilary Pauley, is going to auction.

Over 300 lots of antique and vintage teddy bears from Grandma's Teddy Bear Museum, the private museum of Hilary Pauley, will be offered for sale at Special Auction Services in Newbury on Wednesday 10 June.

Estimated to make over £60,000, the auction will be an excellent opportunity to acquire some rare and characterful bears by renowned manufacturers including Steiff, Farnell, Bing, Jopi, Chiltern and Merrythought and fine examples from countries such as France, Germany and America.

Highlights include a Steiff Record Teddy on wheeled trolley circa 1910 which is estimated at £1,500-£2,000; a 1950s Dean's Rag Book Co. Tru-to-Life black bear is expected to fetch £800-1,000; a rare Pintel (French) white mohair teddy bear with rare chest button carries an estimate of £600-800; while a rare Chad Valley red artificial silk plush teddy bear could realise £300-400.

Talking about the auction, Hilary Pauley says, “It's time to part with some of my collection. I have collected quickly over eight years and now have over 600 bears. In that time my taste has changed, and I now have a much clearer vision of how my collection should look. I love all of my bears but have simply run out of room and want to cut back a large percentage, so I can re-grow the collection with my current knowledge.

I can't think of any safer hands to pass the bears on to than my teddy chum, Daniel Agnew of Special Auction Services to send them all to their new homes. I think it will be great fun and I will enjoy seeing my beloved bears finding new owners.”

Teddy Bear Expert at Special Auction Services Daniel Agnew said: ”Hilary’s collection comprises some lovely examples of antique bears which are in great condition and are priced for both new and established collectors. I am sure we will find lovely new homes for them”.
