A diecast Mercury Model No.88 Saurer Van in excellent to near mint condition, more than doubled its estimate of £300-£400 and rolled away at a juggernaut sized £850.
The van, a rare advertising model was made for a company in Switzerland and attracted lots of attention before finally selling to an international buyer from Germany. The van was one of two exceptional diecast Mercury models wowing bidders at British Toy Auctions this month. The second, a Mercury No.96 BCS 8000L Aquila Tanker, also smashed its estimate of £200-£300, romping home at £380.
Diecast items always perform well at Runcorn and in addition to the spectacular Mercury results, Dinky, Matchbox and Lesney continue to attract a lot of attention. Particularly notable hammer prices were a Dinky No.987 ABC TV Mobile Control Room which sold for the top end of its estimate at £120.
August’s sale also saw Hornby do rather well again when a No.2 Special Pullman Set containing the named coaches ‘Lolanthe’ and ‘Arcadia’ fetched £200 and proving the enduring popularity of model railways, three boxed HO gauge electric overhead locomotives by Bemo and Kleinbahn doubled their estimate with the hammer falling on £180.
British Toy Auctions have enjoyed an exceptional year so far, beating sales records at every auction and attracting more and more international interest. Riding on this success, the company plan to hold its first double day sale on 13 and 14 September. The sale on Saturday 14 September is planned to focus on that all-time favourite, locomotives.
