The Pride 50p coin was released in 2022. It was released to celebrate 50 years of Pride UK. This is the first time Britain’s LGBTQ+ community has been represented on a UK coin.
This coin forms a part of a commitment by the Royal Mint to work with diverse designers to reflect the UK today and the progression we have all made for equality.
Here is your full guide to the Pride 50p coin and Pride UK.
Pride UK
Pride UK has a legacy that spans decades. They have established themselves as the main event in the LGBTQ+ calendar.
Their first UK gay pride rally took place in London in 1972, since then it has grown and there are now more than 150 pride events across the UK. These events have played a big role in striving the UK towards equality.
Finally in 2014, same-sex marriage was legalised in England, and it gave everyone the opportunity to see the amazing work pride communities have done and the importance of protests.
They continue their work every year with June now being classified as Pride month, a month-long celebration of the strength and courage members of the LGBTQ+ community have.
Pride 50p
The reverse design of the 50p was designed by artist and LGBTQ+ activist Dominique Holmes. It features a selection of rainbows with the words: unity, equality, pride, visibility and protest. Holmes has previously discussed their immense pride when taking on this task and everyone can agree it is the perfect representation of an amazing community.
The obverse features Queen Elizabeth II’s last coinage portrait by Jody Clark.
While the regular circulation coin was released as usual, silver proof and brilliant uncirculated were released in colour. Because of this the rainbows really stood out on the coin, and you could see the representation of all members of the community with the use of the up-to-date pride flag.
5 million of the circulated coin was minted and can still be found amongst change today.

Pride 50p Value
The special colour edition of the Pride 50p has unexpectedly increased rather rapidly in value. This year the coin sold for £31, which in only 3 years is a rapid increase. This makes it a coin to hold onto for the future.
However, the circulated coin has not increased as dramatically in value with most being sold between £1-£5 on eBay. And available for £8 on The Royal Mint website.
The value of this coin is less about the monetary value but more about the community value as it has given a platform for LGBTQ+ people to feel included within a large British company like The Royal Mint.
