In 2020, The Royal Mint released a commemorative 50p coin titled ‘Diversity Built Britain.’ Here is everything you need to know about the 50p.
Diversity Built Britain 50p
The Diversity Built Britain 50p was released in 2020 by the Royal Mint. It was released to celebrate the contributions of minority communities in the UK. This 50p was the first commemorative coin to celebrate the nation’s diversity.
It was launched following the 2020 “We Too Built Britain” campaign with 2.5 million coins entering circulation. The designer was Dominique Evans, one of the UK’s regular coin designers, she used this design to reflect on her own experience of diversity.
Evans design features the words “DIVERSITY BUILT BRITAIN” and has a background of interconnected triangles symbolising community strength. The obverse side features the 5th portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
This coin represented a shift for The Royal Mint as they adjusted their policies to be more inclusive of the different communities in the UK.
We Too Built Britain Campaign
Founded by Zehra Zaidi in 2019, We Too Built Britain was created to tell the stories of underrepresented groups in Britain and to bring them together. Last year, Zaidi was presented with an OBE for her hard work within communities.
The Diversity Built Britain coin kicked off the campaign followed by “Hidden Heroes” which called on MPs from every constituency to ask local people to nominate less-known heroes who deserve to be remembered with a statue.

Value of the Diversity Built Britain 50p
Regular circulation coins generally still match its face value. However, there has been an occasional high-value listings, but these are often representing sellers claims not official valuations.
If you have a Brilliant Uncirculated or silver-proof version of the coin that are selling for around £30. The Royal Mint are currently selling a silver proof version for £55.
Celebrating diversity is so important in today’s world, and the Royal Mint wanted to represent that, so for years to come you can find these coins in your change and be reminded that everybody helped build Britain.
