Mattel’s Ferrari collection is one of the most prolific in the trade, and one could be forgiven for becoming a touch blasé about the range.

However, once in a while an example comes along that takes your breath away like the new 512 S. Numbered 55, this gorgeous beast was driven by Nino Vaccarella and John Surtees to third place in the 1970 1,000 Kilometres of Nürburgring.

The Spyder format and rotating doors allow one to easily view the outstanding cockpit, which is faithfully rendered. The spartan nature of the bare alloy panelling contrasts with the red and black striped seat, excellent blue four-point belts and shining buckles. A highlight is the wonderfully detailed fuse panel on the left of the cockpit.

Then there’s the splendid engine and under-bonnet detail, gold five-star alloy wheels, accurate chrome fuel filler caps, towing eye and bonnet air inlet. Equally impressive is the car’s glorious red finish and perfectly applied numbers and sponsor decals, and the covered engine air inlet pipes to the rear.
