To celebrate the 75th anniversary of Batman’s first appearance, Hot Wheels has launched specially packaged 1/18 scale models from the films of the early nineties under its Elite banner. The films, "Batman Returns" and "Batman Forever" featured two very different Batmobiles.
"Batman Returns", directed by Tim Burton with Michael Keaton as Batman, pits the legendary DC Comics character against the deranged Penguin who is intent on becoming Mayor of Gotham City. But when the mysterious Catwoman appears on the scene, Batman must deal with two adversaries. In order to defend the city from evil, he needs a potent vehicle. His Batmobile is long, low and sleek, combining design elements from 1930s coupes with those of modern racing cars. It features a repeating bat motif, evident in the distinctive wing-shaped tail fins, and is equipped with the most technologically advanced automotive customization features. The model features an extending engine inlet to the front, panels on the top of the side pods that rotate to reveal machine guns, a sliding canopy section to show off the really rather good interior detail and a lifting rear boot section that allows more detail of the jet exhaust area to be seen. Finally, the model can be mounted on a stand that rather beautifully replicates a feature on the actual car that starred in the film where a section underneath the car extends to the ground and acts like a turntable, lifting the car up and enabling it to turn round in very confined spaces!
"Batman Forever" was directed by Joel Schumacher and starred Val Kilmer as Batman. This movie was the third of Warner Bros. Pictures’ Batman series, at the time. With a claimed maximum speed of 330 mph and the remarkable ability to climb up walls, the Batman Forever vehicle is one of the most memorable Batmobiles of all time. The model features remarkable details, from the swooped sky-high tail fins to the shark-like grille that struck fear into the hearts of bad guys all over Gotham City. The passenger compartment roof section shoots forward upon pressing a button on the underside, revealing a nicely detailed interior, complete with a large Batman symbol on the steering wheel to complement the symbols on the wheels. The upper body section is actually modelled in plastic but this adds a nice crisp finish to all the slats and louvres.
