Subbuteo enthusiasts and collectors are in for a real treat when one of the largest known single owner collections comes under the hammer on Tuesday 8th May as part of UK Toy and Model Auctions’ next sale at Craxton Wood Hotel near Chester.

Peter Adolf invented Subbuteo in 1947, but competition existed from a similar game called ‘Newfooty’, which had been in existence since the 1920s. A good earlier Subbuteo example up for sale depicts Stanley Mathews and Nat Lofthouse on the box lid.

There are over 100 boxed sets with many desirable examples including an early 1954 Table Soccer Set comprising flat figures, referee, linesmen, balls and chalk. One of the largest sets ever produced is the desirable Stadium Edition Set, which comprises three lift-out trays containing players and accessories.

Cricket enthusiasts are well catered for with nine sets from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Subbuteo Angling Board Game is now difficult to find and a very nice complete example may be snapped-up by the discerning enthusiast.

Rugby followers will pleased to note there are four Rugby International Edition Sets from the 1960s in earlier style boxes on offer too.

Subbuteo accessories and teams are well catered for including the scarce ‘wire leg’ style TV Tower and Accessories, the C135 VIP Cup Presentation Set.

There are plenty of football teams in the sale with many hard-to-find examples, including heavyweights, zombies and lightweights, plus the highly desirable track-suited examples.

UK Toy & Model Auctions believes that this could be a great opportunity for those who wish to rekindle or add to their interest in the light of the relaunch this year of this great table game after its 15-year absence.

To compliment the Subbuteo collection, also going under the hammer will be a 500-lot selection of model railways items, including Hornby Dublo, Bachmann, Tri-ang, Fleischmann (in the OO and HO scale ranges) plus LGB and other various gauges and makes. Steam enthusiasts are well catered for with many Wilesco and Mamod products on offer.

On the diecast side there are many models for sale including Dinky Toys, Corgi and Matchbox. All manner of collectors will be catered for, including the many bus and commercial vehicle collectors.
