Bassett-Lowke fans weren't disappointed - and got steamed up over this Duchess of Montrose.

Warwick and Warwick’s May auction realised £198,087: yes, toys are still big business! Diecasts, model soldiers and other toys went under the hammer, and there was plenty to tempt the railway buff, too.
In the real steam section an unusual Mamod Steam Roadster (No. SA1) realised £96 but as usual, it was the O gauge section that stole the show. An ACE Trains Class A5 Pacific 4-6-2 LNER 2510 “Quicksilver” No. E/4 locomotive and tender sold for £408 but that was eclipsed by a lovely Bassett-Lowke LMS Princess Coronation Class 4-6-2 BR 46232 “Duchess of Montrose” that achieved £1,020.
A Bing “Royal Scot Passing through Wembley” clockwork set was a little different and this set realised a very respectable £480.
Meanwhile, in the OO gauge section, there was an impressive and extensive collection of Wrenn locomotives offered. Highlights included a Royal Scot 6P 4-6-0 Class LMS 6141 “Caledonian” locomotive and tender (No. W2293), which sold for a creditable £720. Elsewhere, a Duchess 8P 4-6-2 Class BR 46221 “Queen Elizabeth” No. W2299 locomotive and tender achieved £480, while a streamlined Coronation 4-6-2 Class LMS 6244, the “King George VI” No. W2302 locomotive and tender finally stopped at £480. Finally, an A4 Class 4-6-2 LNER “Woodcock” (No. W2283) locomotive and tender fetched £840.
Leaving rail, what about the fabled James Bond Scalextric pursuit set? One went under the hammer and was in good condition. With evocative box art, this is always worth looking out for and it realised £960. Tinplate also performed well on the day, with a Wells-Brimtoy O gauge Cinderella Railcar set sold for £324. Cinderella in a train? You had better believe it… Also up for grabs was an Unique Art Manufacturing Company (US made) Li’l Abner and his Dogpatch 4 Band. A tinplate clockwork novelty item, this oddity achieved £192.
Diecast section highlights included the ever-popular Corgi James Bond Aston Martin DB5 No.26, which realised £144 and a Corgi Walls Ice Cream Van, which sold for £300: just in time for the summer rush? An unusual Denzil Skinner & Co. Nuffield Universal Tractor was bid to £372. This tractor is highly collectable when complete, and isn’t often found on the auction circuit.
Nostalgia in the form of a Dinky pre-war Petrol Station (No.480) stirred memories for some in the room and this interesting set realised £372. But modern models also proved popular in this sale. Examples included an Exoto (Grand Prix Classics) 1/18 scale Lotus Ford Type 72D John Player Special racing car, which sold for £156 and a CMC 1/18 scale 1960 Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage (No. M-047) racer, which achieved a useful £132. Finally, a Minichamps Michael Schumacher Ferrari F310/2 representing the 1996 Italy GP car, in huge 1/12 scale, was an eyeful - and it realised £120.
