Rare Matchbox Vauxhall Victor Sells for £3,600 Images

A difficult to find Matchbox Regular Wheels No. 45A Vauxhall Victor sold for a staggering £3,600 (price includes buyer’s commission) at Vectis Auctions’ General Military & Civilian, General Toys & The Italian Matchbox Collection sale on 12th September, 2012.

The Vauxhall Victor (lot 4644) – featuring a red body, without dashboard casting, silver trim, metal wheels with crimped axles - was in superb condition and included a near mint type B2 Moko box. It was part of a private collection containing 400 items of Matchbox models, including Regular Wheels, Major Packs, King Size and accessories.

Also selling for the same price was a Matchbox Regular Wheels No. 62C Mercury Cougar (lot 4730) with a rare cream body, chrome hubs with black tyres a near mint type E4 colour picture box with correct model illustration and ‘new model’ to end flaps.

But not everything sold for such heady amounts and those just starting out on their Matchbox collection could pick up some reasonably priced items too. For example a Matchbox Regular Wheels No. 6A Euclid Quarry Truck (lot 4432) in a good plus type B2 Moko box achieved £30, while a No. 1A Aveling & Barford Road Roller (lot 4402) sold for the same price.

Plus, it wasn’t just the models that were selling well and a collection of Matchbox catalogues (lot 4812) from the 1960s, featuring some wonderfully illustrated covers, sped past its original estimate of £70-80 to realise £100.

Meanwhile, on a slightly larger scale, the auction also included a host of Eddie Stobart trucks from Corgi, including some from the ‘Hauliers of Renown’ series. Lots 4223-4227, which included mixed collections of Stobart vehicles, all exceed their estimates to achieve an overall price of £960.
