Phil Silvester has just launched “Diecast Gems” - a new business selling high quality market obsolete Diecast toys from Dinky, Corgi, Spot On and other makers.
Phil retired last year from a long working career as an Independent Financial Adviser, having run his own business for many years.,
He says; “I have been an avid collector of Diecast toys, particularly Dinkys, since I was a small child. I am excited that I now have the opportunity to share this passion with fellow like-minded people across the globe, trading and educating about Diecast toys.
CCOGB: We understand that you have been involved in the Ramseys British Diecast valuation catalogue. Can you tell us more about this and your experience?
PS: I have spent many an hour updating the Post War Cars and Farm sections of the catalogue, which has involved re-listing and valuing each model to create a guide price. This, along with my private collecting, has extensively furthered my knowledge and ability to price, detail and assess models. As a result of my experience with Ramseys, I was asked to present on ‘Inside Out’, a current affairs program, where I spoke of collecting and the passion behind it.
CCOGB: Why have you named the business Diecast Gems?
PS: Diecast Gems is about sharing my passion for obsolete Diecast toys with others. We will have a large range of high quality Diecast toys for sale, specialising in Dinky, What I believe will make my site unique will be that I plan to do a series of articles when time permits based on individual or a group of models. The intention of this is to pass on not only my knowledge, but also that of fellow enthusiasts in the hope we will inspire the next generation of collectors.
CCOGB: What will be your first article?
PS: The initial article will be written on a personal favourite of mine; the competition and touring sports cars fondly known as the 100 series. This series of model stirs special memories for me.
CCOGB: Will you look to buy collections to sell?
PS: I expect so. My focus will be on quality stock and so whether to sell on commission or buy outright will depend fundamentally on whether the quality and the price is right. Another crucial point is that the collection retains the integrity and values of Diecast Gems in order to ensure that the site provides what collectors and dealers will expect.
Diecast Gems have a stall at Sandown’s toyfair in November, so if you’re there, we would strongly suggest going to look them up.
