Live steam model of Stephenson's Rocket sells for £2,450 Images
A live steam scale model of Stephenson’s The Rocket made by Yorkshire company Maxwell Hemmens in around 1981 lived up to its name at Halls’ Toy Auction on 19th March, as bidding rocketed to £2,450.
The unused, limited edition model, which included a boiler test certificate and operating instructions, was consigned by a Shropshire collector to Halls’ successful toys and interiors auction and sold to an online bidder from the Midlands.
The model had a wooden clad boiler fitted with two external cylinders that drove wooden spoked wheels with a water pump and reversing gear. Fired with wood and coal, the model sat on a base track.
Meanwhile, another fine piece of engineering, a stationary vertical single cylinder overhead steam engine steam model by Stuart contained within a glass case, sold for £480.
Halls’ toys specialist Stewart Orr said he was delighted with the prices achieved by both steam models and revealed that he already has more live steam models consigned for the next interiors and toys auction on 28th May.
Elsewhere in the model railways section, a one-inch scale narrow gauge tank locomotive 'The Rheidol', which was made to run on O Gauge line and built as a prototype for Bradford Barton Ltd, sold for £480. The model illustrated the Vale of Rheidol narrow gauge line between Aberystwyth and Devil’s Bridge.
Finally, a 1971 1/8 scale unmade kit of a Rolls Royce Phantom II Drop Head Sedanca Coupe by Pocher in its original box sold for £360, while a collection of Britains farm vehicles, including a boxed Fordson Major tractor, made £250.
