Sir John Arthur "Jack" Brabham, AO, OBE, was an Australian racing driver who won the Formula One world drivers championship in 1959, 1960, and 1966. In the 1960s, the former RAAF flight mechanic also tuned standard road cars. One of the models he worked his magic on was the Triumph Herald.
He placed a Coventry Climax engine (as used by Lotus in its racing cars) in the Herald. The Climax originated as the engine of a fire pump unit and was able to rev to 5000 rpm from standstill. The Herald was transformed and the power was similar to the later Vitesse MkII variant. Brabham also upgraded the brakes, tyres, rear suspension and dashboard.
This Brabham Herald was very expensive for the early sixties and therefore only 11 examples were made; coupés, saloon and a single estate version. Most of these cars have survived and there is also a reproduction coupé in the colours of the prototype Herald.
The 1/43 scale models by Derrez Models have been produced in the colours and specifications of the real cars, including the correct registration numbers. Because the Brabham Herald had a Coventry Climax pump trailer engine, the models can be offered as the car on its own, with the pump unit as a trailer behind the model, or with the pump trailer separate. Photo etched wire wheels are available as an optional extra and the models can be delivered in coupé or saloon versions.
