When we heard a few months ago that Mattel, makers of the Hot Wheels range, had signed a new deal to produce vehicles based on the Star Wars franchise, to say that we were excited is a bit of an understatement. We immediately began to imagine diecast versions of iconic spaceships like the Millennium Falcon, X-Wing Fighter and TIE Fighter... and we even started to dream of detailed 1/18 scale versions as part of the Elite range.

However, all of this wasn't to be because recently Mattel has unveiled the first batch of its Star Wars products and they're a little unusual. Rather than making replicas of existing vehicles from the films, Mattel has instead chosen to create 'character cars' inspired by famous heroes and villians from the original trilogy.

We must admit that initially we were a little disappointed by the cars but they're starting to grow on us... particularly that neat Yoda car. They're due for release any time and all have a RRP of £4.99. Take a look below and see what you think (thanks to Amerang for the pictures).

The Chewbacca monster truck-style thing is probably our least favourite of the models. The idea of a hairy truck is just weird!

Although we would have preferred an X-Wing, at least we've got Luke Skywalker in his orange flightsuit. This one actually works well as a Rebel-inspired vehicle and the orange/white combo is cool.

R2-D2's motor is another peculiar one. Then again, we've seen the C3-PO character car (sadly not pictured here) and this looks positively brilliant compared to that one.

Now we're getting to the good stuff! Darth Vader's sleek racer looks positively evil and front the front resembles the Sith Lord's infamous mask. We're definitely tempted to turn to the Dark Side after seeing this.

Finally we come to our favourite of the bunch - the Yoda Car. There's just something immediately likeable about this little green car with ears at the back... hmmm, wonder what these would look like on the Collectors Club of Great Britain Yaris?!
