When this clearly damaged 19th century tin plate toy went on sale at the recent Sworders Country House in Stansted Mountfitchet sale estimate of just £600-800 suggested that they didn't hold out much hope for it! By the end of the sale the hammer fell at a staggering £23,000 (plus 22% buyers premium)!  When this London omnibus was built by German toy make Rock & Graner (1813-1904) in the 1860s it represented the height of luxury toys and clearly it is still in great demand. This piece was one of many from the period depicting horse drawn omnibuses from different cities of the world. It was originally sent to a 'Miss F. B. Bright of Biggleswade'.
