The Collectors’ Toys, Dolls & Games sale at Toovey’s on 19th March included a wide selection of Dinky diecast from large groups of playworn models to mint examples in their original boxes.

Perhaps the most impressive item in the auction was the smashing Dinky Toys No. 249 Gift Set Racing Cars, including a No. 233 Cooper Bristol, a No. 232 Alfa-Romeo, a No. 234 Ferrari, a No. 235 HWM and a No. 231 Maserati, all contained in a white striped box with inner display card. There were some minor paint chips, while the box had a tear/corner but that didn’t deter enthusiasts and it realised £950.

Elsewhere a selection of Dinky trucks also caused a stir. A Dinky Supertoys No. 943 Leyland Octopus tanker in an eye-catching red Esso livery, inside a blue and white striped box, sold for £160; a Dinky Supertoys No. 918 Guy van ‘Ever Ready’, 2nd type cab in box realised £130 and a Dinky Toys No. 513 Guy flat truck with tailboard, 1st type cab, finished in duo green, with a blue striped box, made £130.

Finally, although most may normally think of diecast cars of trucks when you mention Dinky, a Dinky Toys No. Express Passenger Train was one of the more intriguing lots at Toovey’s. The set include a streamlined locomotive, tender and two coaches – the locomotive was in green, while the coaches were red/cream. It realised £70.
