The little-known 1949 Kurtis Sport Car is a real beauty

Next time you're at Tesco's, doing the weekly shop, make sure you swing by the toy section, because that's where the latest Matchbox releases can be found, usually right next to the Hot Wheels box (which is also worth a rummage through too, of course). Every so often, you'll find an absolute gem.

They might have plastic bases these days, but these marvellous models still have diecast bodies and this is one of the prettiest for a long time. The little-known 1949 Kurtis Sport Car is a real beauty and has quite a story behind it.

Designed by Frank Kurtis, based on a 1949 Ford chassis, only a handful were produced before the rights were sold on. It would soon reappear as the Muntz Jet and some elements of the design had links to the first Chevrolet Corvette.
