Cast iron Popeye brings in the big bucks at auction for Bertoia

A cast iron Hubley Popeye on Motorcycle model sold for $19,550 (approx £12,323) at Bertoia Auctions' Spring Sale held 23rd-24th March.

The model, which was from the Bob Brady Collection, carried a factory tag as it was an ex-showroom display piece. It had minor chipping and was in near mint condition.

The figure of Popeye had moving arms and was depicted in his familiar sailor suit. The motorcycle had rubber tyres and nickel spoke wheels with its clicker intact. It also had its original pull string with ball end.

It had a pre-sale estimate of $10,000-12,000 (approx £6,303-7,564).
