A first edition of Beatrix Potter’s Appley Dapply’s Nursery Rhymes is set for sale in Tennants’ Book, Maps & Ephemera Auction on 2nd August (Estimate: £800-1,200). The little volume, complete in its original dust wrapper, is in exceptionally good condition. Beloved by generations of children, Appley Dapply was the first book that departed from Beatrix Potter’s usual narrative tales. Potter was very fond of rhymes and had been gathering together verses and illustrations since the publication of her first book. However, in 1917 her publishers, Frederick Warne & Co, ran into financial difficulty and Potter offered them her rhymes as they could be published straight away. Appley Dapply was a huge success and saw the sale of over 20,000 copies from October – December. The sale also includes Part II of the John Berry Collection of original illustrations made for Ladybird books by artist and illustrator John Berry (1920-2009) - we featured Part I of the collection in our June issue!
