According to the auction’s Hugo Marsh, the highlight of this successful sale was the titanic tussle between the two characters photographed on the front cover of the auction catalogue: Batman versus the Hulk. Here, Batman was a battery operated figure made in Japan by Nomura in the late 1960s. However, his somewhat portly build was clearly no match for the lithe green, latex and rubber Denys Fisher Stretch Incredible Hulk from 1979, who won the day with a bid of £1,000 against the caped crusader’s lesser £750. Aside from these two classic comic book heroes, other areas of interest included Star Wars, with the small figures proving incredibly popular. The total realised for this section alone was £6,560.

In a very different vein was a gorgeous shipbuilder’s half-hull model of the trawler Princess Marie Jose from 1915: hard to value such items, perhaps, but this stunning boat sailed away to make £1,600. Similar naval fare in the shape of a large collection of Tri-ang Minic ships and other waterline models was knocked down for an impressive £5,190.
