The ‘Toys for the Collector’ auction at Special Auction Services on 29 January was a great success with the majority of the 675 lots sold.

Highlights included twenty-four Japanese tinplate toys from a 1950s toy shop in Malaysia. Despite showing signs of the many years spent in a hot and humid climate they sold for a total of £4,652.

Other lots included a rare Britains Light Goods Van Set No2024 which went to a new home for £786, a tinplate Nomura Spaceman which sold for £630, a Nomura Cadillac which went for £290, and an Alps friction drive truck set which saw the hammer finally drop at £450.

A 1950s Britains collection, which was sold by a vendor whose relative was a painter in the factory, totalled an impressive £6,764. The collection comprised rare colour and casting variations of zoo animals along with farm, civilian and military vehicles, as well as soldiers.

In addition, a rare but well-used 1905 Bing painted tinplate clockwork Motor Cab sold for £1,936, while a Tipp & Co lithographed tinplate clockwork model of the British R100 Airship made £1,331.

The marine and aircraft model section also proved popular: a Bassett-Lowke model of the liner ‘SA Vaal’ realised £968; a modern model of Chemical Tanker ‘Baltic Admiral’ sold for £581; and a wooden ‘Heather Glen’ vintage pond yacht went for £557, which was six times its estimate, despite being repainted and lacking its mast and sails.
