The 10th anniversary of the Midlands Garden Rail Show exhibition for the bigger gauges – O, G, 1, 16mm and more – was celebrated in style with two action-packed days at the Warwickshire Exhibition Centre. More than 2,000 visitors took advantage of the event and some warm spring sunshine, which also boosted sales at the ice cream van parked outside the venue!

This event comprises a wonderful mix of working vintage and contemporary layouts, model engineering and society displays, together with relevant trade support from the specialist firms catering for those who like big model trains, either as collectables or for running them.

A wide range of models, accessories and tools was available and trade looked brisk when I visited on the Saturday judging by the number of boxes being taken back to vehicles. There was also a friendly atmosphere with plenty of advice and good-natured banter being handed out free of charge!

For lovers of classic toy trains there was plenty to enjoy and the Gauge One Model Railway Association’s (G1MRA) vintage gauge 1 tinplate trains certainly belied their age as locomotives from the likes of Bing, Bassett-Lowke, Carette and Marklin whisked their rakes of wagons and coaches around the circuit.
