The May issue of Book and Magazine Collector focuses on the theme of the Werewolf in Literature. The myth of the man who turns into a wolf whenever the moon is full goes all the way back to the ancient Greeks, and is mentioned in Ovid. Richard Dalby features a roundup of werewolf books, beginning with the first one on English literature by Captain Marryatt in The Phantom Ship (1839) so you can start or complete a collection.
2010 is also the centenary of Scott’s fateful expedition to the South Pole. The literature on this is vast and very popular with collectors. We will be focussing on the first-hand accounts done by all the members of the crew and we also have a competition for you to win a copy of Scott’s Last Expedition from the Folio Society.
For those of you who enjoy occult phenomenon, we look at the large amount of literature dealing with crop circles, by an author who has examined many of them and remains sceptical about their provenance. We cover Rigby Graham’s diverse and illustrious career by examining his vast array of different techniques such as woodcuts, etchings and screen prints.
We also interview Simon Heffer, assistant editor of The Daily Telegraph who is much followed for his political and social comment columns. We talk to him about his work as a prolific author of history books, and a voracious book collector.
Finally we start a new column from our regular contributor ‘betweenthelines’ in which he takes a new slant on the old paths of book collecting, and makes suggestions in which books can be looked at afresh and collected in different ways.
Crop Circles - man-made or evidence of alien landings? There are a surprising number of books on the subject and many are collectable. Andrew Thomas has surveyed the circles and the books, and comes to his own conclusions.
