I was pleased to discover the contemporary stamps of Namibia and Botswana, thanks to the presence of the postal authorities of these two countries at London 2010.
Both states have a conservative "new issues" policy, with just five or six series a year. The quality of the designs - in particular those of Namibia - set a benchmark that Royal Mail could learn from.
The two countries participate in the joint issues of the South African Post Office Authorities (SAPOA) - there have been three of these so far, I think. The third joint issue (2010 World Cup) I could do without, but the first and second series - which include stunning minature sheets - are focused on African Birds and National Animals: in short, impressive designs. I may try to complete all of the country sets for these stamps!

I attended on the first day and was pleasantly surprised at the general layout and atmosphere of the exhibition. I found the staff on the Stanley Gibbons' stand particularly helpful and was able to get a look at one of the Frank Godden "Warwick" albums they are now selling. Not as grand as the 'De Luxe" album, but more in keeping with the collections of non-millionaires. If I can get the right deal I may well stump up for one of these at their open day this month. My only criticisms of the exhibition would be the amount of space taken up by Royal Mail to market their "collectables" tat and the very poor catering provision made at the exhibition. Whilst this should be provided at reasonable cost, it should also be fitting of a major International Exhibition. The catering here was a long, long way from that. We used to be good at this stuff, what went wrong here?
